The event is significant for England and several other countries that recognise Saint George as their patron, including Ethiopia, Portugal and Georgia – and cities including Freiburg and Beirut.
Many paintings depict St George slaying a dragon, though the actual reason for his death is believed to be down to the martyr’s refusal to renounce his Christian faith for Roman Paganism.
Although St George never visited England, the country adopted him as its saint in 1415 for his bravery and chivalry.

“England with all thy faults, I love thee still – My country! and, while yet a nook is left Where English minds and manners may be found, Shall be constrained to love thee.” – William Cowper
“The English are not very spiritual people, so they invented cricket to give them some idea of eternity.” – George Bernard Shaw

Happy St George’s day Messages
So to honour this remarkable event, I went into the local pub, it was quite full. I ordered a pint, while waiting for it I decided to recite some of Shakespeare’s great works. Clearing my throat I said in a loud voice….”All the world‘s a stage, and all the men and women merely players”.
At this point, the pub went quiet, everyone turned to look at me, then turned away muttering. I continued….”They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts”.
Hecklers started to jeer me and one person even told me to cough, well that’s what it sounded like to me.
I then continued…”Is this a dagger which I see before me, the handle toward my hand?” Everybody looked at me, somebody shouted…. just cough or I’ll give you a dagger, or was it f*** off or I’ll give you a dagger?
It was very noisy and by now the punters were getting really angry, some throwing beer mats and packets of peanuts at me. Not one to be put off easily, I continued……”This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day.”
More angry jeering, at this point, the Landlord came over I could see the anger in his face, through gritted teeth and pointing to the door, he said to me…BARD!!
“England has always been disinclined to accept human nature.” – E.M. Forster

Happy Saint George’s Day Status
This is not the first time Facebook has come under criticism for its celebration of national days.
Last year, users wishing to update their status with a St Andrew’s Day message were left bewildered by the appearance of a Romanian flag.
Scottish users who wished to mark the occasion by choosing the ‘celebrating St Andrew’s Day’ status were left miffed when the blue, yellow and red Romanian flag appeared on their graphic.
But during the Middle Ages he became revered by the English and according to legend fought on their side in the Crusades and the Hundred Years’ War.
But the Romanian graphic was no use to Scots who were looking forward to sharing their patriotism.
Last month, Facebook activated its Safety Check tool in the aftermath of a suicide bombing in Pakistan that killed at least 65 people.
The company apologised after the urgent notification was mistakenly sent to people in countries thousands of miles away, sparking fear and confusion online.
People will come and go from our life but there is only one who will always be there for us with his blessings. Celebrate and pray him on this propitious St. George’s Day.
As the saint’s day falls in Easter week this year, churches have put celebrations on hold.
Anglicans will mark the patron saint’s day on Monday 29 April, while Catholics will transfer the day to 30 April.
The day honouring the dragon-slaying saint has been an important festival since the 15th Century.
In Manchester, the annual St George’s parade was held on bank holiday Monday, with bands, floats, people dressed as knights in armour and scooters riding in formation.
Best wishes to you and the family on this precious St. George’s Day. Hope you have a joyous and peaceful day ahead.
Funny St. George’s Day Quotes and Messages
Georgia is celebrating Saint George’s day today, one of the most important days for Orthodox Christians.
Twice a year, on May 6 and November 23 (according to the Julian calendar), Saint George’s Day is celebrated among Orthodox Christians worldwide.
The event is marked by various Christian churches and by several nations, kingdoms and cities where Saint George is the patron saint.
“Saint George has a special place in Georgia’s history. I want to send warm wishes to Georgian citizens and wish the Georgian nation unity and success,” PM Bakhtadze said today while visiting the Trinity Cathedral Church.
Saint George was born in the latter part of the third century AD to a Greek Christian noble family in Lydda, Palestine. After his father’s death, George enlisted in the Roman Army and by his late 20s, was promoted to the rank of Tribunus and joined the imperial guard of the Emperor Diocletian at Nicomedia, the eastern capital city of the Roman Empire.
During the year 303 AD, the Emperor Diocletian summoned his officers and instructed them to persecute the Christians. When George refused to do so he was tortured and then beheaded on April 23, (April 23 corresponds to 6 May on the Julian calendar).
“England is profoundly bizarre place that has produced thousands of bands that world has worshipped.” – Gene Simmons
“So, Blair keep your England, and let me keep my Zimbabwe.” – Robert Mugabe
Up and down the country – including here in Downing Street – the flag of St George is flying high and celebrations – from the archaic to the eccentric – are taking place:
St George has been England’s patron saint since 1350. But for too long, his feast day – England’s national day – has been overlooked. Today, though, more and more people are coming together on or around April the 23rd, eager to celebrate everything it is to be English. And there is much to celebrate. Because this is a country whose achievements in industry, in technology, sport, music, literature and the arts – they far outweigh our size.
In America, where Newcastle Brown Ale is the most imported ale; in China, where the most popular international football team is from London: Arsenal; in Australia, where they go mad for a Cornish cuisine – the humble pasty; in South Korea, where Yorkshire-set Downton Abbey is a favourite. And across the globe, where the best-selling band is from Liverpool: the Beatles.
This St George’s Day, I want us to reflect on one of England’s greatest achievements: its role in the world’s greatest family of nations – the United Kingdom. In just 5 months, the people of Scotland will go to the polls and decide whether they want to remain a part of this global success story. So let’s prove that we can be proud of our individual nations and be committed to our union of nations. Because no matter how great we are alone, we will always be greater together.
“Ping-pong was invented on the dining tables of England in the 19th century, and it was called Wiff-Waff! And there, I think, you have the difference between us and the rest of the world. Other nations, the French, looked at a dining table and saw an opportunity to have dinner; we looked at it and saw an opportunity to play Wiff-waff.”-Boris Johnson
Many people choose to wear patriotic clothing or fly a flag with St George’s cross above buildings and pubs.
