like many early Christian saints, verifiable historical facts about David can he hard to come by. Much of his life story is based on the Buchedd Dewi (Life of David) written by the scholar Rhigyfarch at the end of the 11th century.
St David is thought to have been born around 500 AD in Pembrokeshire on the west coast of Wales. Non, the woman believed to be his mother, was also a saint. He was trained as a priest under the tutelage of St Paulinus.
Various miracles are attributed to St David, including restoring the sight of his teacher and, most famously, creating an entirely new hill (now the village of Llanddewi Brefi) during an outdoor sermon.

He was named the Archbishop of Wales at the Synod of Brefi church council in 550, but remained in the settlement of Menevia – later named St Davids in his honour – where he had set up a large monastery which is now St David’s Cathedral.
We don’t know exactly when he died, but 1 March became the accepted date, with the year most commonly estimated at 589AD.
Leeks are worn as they were worn by soldiers during their battle against the Saxons. Wanting to be able to distinguish them from the enemy, St David told the Welsh soldiers to wear the vegetable. When they then won the battle, it became a national emblem and was associated with the day.
The official National St David’s Day parade is held in Cardiff, but have a look to see if you’re near any parade routes.

It is believed that St David was a vegetarian. Not only that, but his diet was mainly water and leeks! Perhaps that’s another reason for leek to become a national emblem.
You’ll often see a dove in pictures with the saint. This is because his most famous miracle was forming a hill when preaching so that those at the back could hear him. After it happened, a white dove sent by god sat on his shoulder.
St David is the only British/Irish saint to be born in the country he is a patron of! Legend believes that he was born atop a hill in Pembrokeshire during a storm!
Literally a miracle worker, St David has had several miracles associated to him. Perhaps the most famous took place in Llanddewi Brefi, when he was preaching to a large crowd and people near the back started to complain (the original heckle?) that they couldn’t hear him, so the ground beneath his feet began to rise, until St David was stood on a hill. Then a white dove, sent by God, came to sit on his shoulder.
St David lived a long life (maybe it was all the leeks?) and died on 1 March, 589, which is why we celebrate St David’s Day on the 1 March! He is buried at the site of St David’s Cathedral, where his shrine has become a popular pilgrimage destination, especially throughout the Middle Ages.

St David’s last words to his followers came from his final sermon: Be joyful, keep the faith and do the little things that you have heard and seen me do. In fact, you might have heard of ‘Gwnewch y pethau bychain mewn bywyd’ which means ‘do the little things in life’ and is still a popular Welsh saying today.

The future looks bright for our nation in spite of the challenges that we are all facing. The war in Ukraine has meant high energy costs, making life difficult for many. But it has also brought out the best of the community spirit that Wales is so famous for. So many people have welcomed Ukrainian people into their homes, providing sanctuary and a place to call home for those desperately in need.
And it is that same community spirit, coupled with hard work and determination, that is helping us recover from the Covid pandemic and build a prosperous future for Wales.
The UK Government is doing all it can to deliver for the people of Wales. We will soon announce the successful bid for the first Freeport in Wales, which will create jobs and drive growth and prosperity. Have a look around at the bell tower and the library or pop in to see the Cathedral exhibition, outlining the Cathedral’s history and the life of St David, before paying homage at St David’s shrine.

As with everything, parades are one of the most fun, exciting ways to get fully immersed in celebrations.
Many Welsh towns and cities are holding parades and events before, on and after St David’s Day itself, so you’ve got plenty of opportunity to get involved and witness the patriotism firsthand.
Miracles of St. David
The most traditional Welsh event is the commemoration of St. David’s Day, which is observed on March 1 and honors the Welsh patron saint as well as the founder of various religious movements, St. David, who was the sole native-born patron saint including both Ireland and Great Britain.
Renowned teacher St. David, who established St. David’s Cathedral, was renowned for his pious austerity, resolve to forego sensual delights in favor of spiritual development, and ability to perform miracles. In Wales, St. David’s Day is widely observed as a celebration of his life and contributions.
Several ancient sites in Wales are accessible to everyone for free on St. David’s Day, including St. David’s Bishop’s Castle. For instance, Wales’s patron saint, Dewi Sant, resides in the medieval Bishop’s Palace in St. Davids, while Caerphilly Castle is well-known for its swinging tower. Both of these locations are close to St. David’s Cathedral. There is a nationwide parade every year.
In Wales, St. David’s Day is observed in different ways, such as with military exercises, musical performances, and food festivals. Find a neighboring party if that is out of your financial range. Even the American main cities of Washington, D.C., as well as Los Angeles, observe the Welsh holiday with festivities.
On St. David’s Day, the leek, the patron saint’s symbol, and the daffodil, the country’s floral emblem, are frequently worn. In Wales, many people, especially children, dress in traditional Welsh costumes. Welsh flannels are the preferred material for women’s long coats, petticoats, and extravagantly frilled bonnets.
Search for Bara Brith and Welsh cakes online. No matter that there aren’t any Welsh restaurants in the area. Make some laverbread, Welsh rarebit or cawl, or “Glamorgan sausage” to commemorate Welsh food.
Despite Saint Andrew’s Day in Scotland and Saint Patrick’s Day in Ireland being national holidays, Saint David’s Day is currently not a national holiday in Wales, although many people are keen for it to be a bank holiday.
People can wear daffodils or leeks, which are symbols of Wales, or enjoy Welsh food such as cawl – a traditional soup or broth made with lamb, potatoes and carrots – and Welsh rarebit.
Some towns and cities across Wales put on parades, such as Cardiff, Swansea, and Aberyswth.
